A person of interest has been developed in the robbery of a Niles truck stop earlier this month.

Capt. Robert Boyce, of the Berrien County Sheriff’s Department, said detectives have come up with a person of interest in the case, although there is no “solid suspect” at this point.

“The Berrien County Sheriff’s Office Detective Bureau members are currently following up on all the tips that have been received as of this date,” Boyce said Thursday afternoon.

The robbery occurred at approximately 12:06 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 14, at JD’s Truck Stop at 1655 Mayflower Road in Bertrand Township. At that time, a white male or light-skinned Hispanic male armed with a pistol took an undisclosed amount of cash from the business, according to police.

The sheriff’s department described the suspect as standing approximately 5 feet, 5 inches tall with a thin build. Police also said the suspect had a tattoo on his right forearm and was wearing a red shirt believed to be a brand called “Famous Stars & Straps,” red pants and a red and white hat.

No one was injured in the incident.

Boyce said the sheriff’s department has received many tips from the community about the incident.

Boyce encouraged anyone with information about the crime to contact the Berrien County Sheriff’s Office by phone at (269) 983-7141 ext. 7275 or by email at detectives@berriencounty.org
