Young Chieftain golfers showing promise

A young Dowagiac girls golf team has its first two jamborees under its belt and coach Bob Turner could not be more pleased with what he saw earlier this week.

The Chieftains finished fifth in the first jamboree hosted by South Haven at HawksHead Monday morning.

Dowagiac then finished sixth after tying with Otsego for fifth place in the afternoon jamboree hosted by Allegan at Cheshire Hills.

The Chieftains dropped to sixth based on the fifth-person tiebreaker.

“I was really happy with how things went Monday,” Turner said. “Like I said last night (Monday), we shot 305 at HawksHead last year and 228 this year.

“Looking at the scores from HawksHead, Sturgis is the only school that was out of reach. There were five schools between 226 and 230. so we are right there in the mix.”

Dowagiac was led by freshman Rebecca Franklin, who shot 50 in South Haven, which put her in the individual top 10 at the jamboree.

She shot 51 to tie teammate Ally Hale for the top spot on the Chieftain roster at Allegan.

“Our freshmen played great for their first varsity matches,” Turner said. “Rebecca led us in scoring the first jamboree and tied Ally Hale in the second one.

“Now that they have a couple of matches under their belts, the nerves should be gone and we can keep getting more and more confidence.”

Dowagiac will host the Wolverine Conference at Indian Lake Hills Golf Course Monday.

Play is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.

The Chieftains will wrap up the week with another Wolverine doubleheader.

Plainwell will host the opening jamboree at 8:30 a.m. before the teams head across U.S. Highway 131 to play in the jamboree being hosted by Otsego at 1 p.m.
