Niles FOP to host corn roast Friday

NILES — Niles Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 95 is hosting a corn roast at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 26. Cost is $10 per person or a current FOP membership. Entry includes food (pulled pork, side items and corn) and a non-alcoholic drink. Beer is available for $1 a drink.

This year’s raffle is for a M16 replica FOP rifle. Tickets are $5 each.

The event will include 50/50 raffles and prize drawings. The event is open to the public. No one under the age of 21 will be admitted.

 

New fire truck at Bertrand Township open house

BERTRAND TOWNSHIP — Bertrand Township and the Bertrand Township Fire Department will introduce the township’s new fire engine during an open house 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 17, at the community hall at 3835 Buffalo Road in Buchanan.

In addition to seeing the new fire engine, attendees can expect food, games, Ken’s balloons and magic, and a Med Flight helicopter.

It is open to the public.

 

Patriots Day walk planned for Niles

NILES — Point Man of Niles Ministries has scheduled a Michiana Patriots Walk at 1 p.m. Sept. 11 at the Riverfront Park Amphitheater in Niles.

All donations will go toward the Niles Salvation Army’s building fund and Point Man of Niles Ministry programs to veterans and their spouses. For more information, email tommeyerusnret@pointmanniles.com.

 

Chemical Bank to host donation drive

NILES — Chemical Bank locations in Michiana will host a donation drive to collect items for local emergency shelters Thursday, Sept. 15. People are encouraged to drop of hygiene items, cleaning supplies and household items. The Niles, Buchanan, Edwardsburg and Dowagiac locations are among the participating locations.

 

Niles community orchestra to perform

NILES — The Niles Area Community Orchestra will present “It’s Showtime” at 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 11 at the Niles District Library, which is located at 620 E. Main St., in Niles.

The concert will feature music from “Wicked,” “Star Wars,” “les Miserables,” “Magnificent 7,” and “Richard Rodgers.”

Admission is a non-perishable food item for the Niles Salvation Army food pantry.

The performance is supported by The New Apostolic Church of Niles and The Music Academies in downtown Niles.

 

Free heart health screening offered

NILES — Lakeland Health will offer a free heart health screening, education and health coaching event for community members from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 30 at Niles Salvation Army, located at 424 N. 15th St.

The screening will include a fasting cholesterol lipid panel, blood pressure, and body mass index (BMI) screening. The cholesterol lipid panel includes total cholesterol, HDL, LDL, triglycerides, and blood sugar. A 12-hour fast (no food, only water) is required. Participants must be age 18 or older. Refreshments will be provided.
