Williams scores twice as Dowagiac beats Bangor 6-1

Gage Williams scored a goal and had two assists as Dowagiac defeated visiting Bangor 6-1 in the season opener for the Chieftains Monday.

Williams scored the first goal of the season for the Chieftains, while he assisted on goals by Mariano Brito and Alec Saylor.

Dowagiac took a 2-0 lead into the second half as Williams scored in the 28th minute and Antonio Brito scored a minute later. Both goals were unassisted.

“It started slow, but once we calmed down and starting possessing the ball we began good counter attacks giving us a lot of scoring opportunities,” Dowagiac coach Mike Williams said. “Defense played solid throughout the game.”

Mario Brito opened the second half with a goal in the 46th minute.

Roberto Lopez averted the shutout for the Vikings with a goal in the 49th minute.

Dowagiac’s final three goals were Jose Carillo, Saylor and Gavin Gree. Mariano Brito assisted on the Carillo and Green goals.

Dowagiac outshot Bangor 34-3.

Victor Zavala had two saves for the Chieftains. Buddy Shafer had 25 saves for the Vikings.
