No new faces will be joining Dowagiac’s two largest school boards following the general election in November, according to a list of candidates provided to the Dowagiac Daily New by the Cass County Clerk/Register Office.

The four incumbents on the Dowagiac Union Schools Board of Education and the four incumbents on the Southwestern Michigan College Board of Trustees that are up for reelection this year will be running without opposition on Election Day, which takes place Nov. 8. No other candidates submitted their names for the positions by the time the filing deadline passed on July 26.

In the Dowagiac Board of Education, incumbents Larry Schmidt, board president; Ruth Ausra, vice president; Claudia Zebell, secretary; and Ronda Sullivan, trustee, will all be seeking reelection to the school board. The four will be running for another four-year term, which will expire in 2020.

Not running for reelection this year are Treasurer Doug Kolmodin and trustees Phyllis Sarabyn and Ronald Jones, whose terms expire in 2018.

In the SMC Board, Secretary Bill White, of Jones, and Trustee Beth Cripe, of Dowagiac, will both be seeking reelection for another six-year term on the college board.

In addition, trustee Todd Obren, of Edwardsburg, will seek election for a partial term, ending in 2018, while trustee Heidi Grabemeyer-Layman, of Dowagiac, will seek election for a partial term in 2020. Both Obren and Grabemeyer-Layman were appointed to the board in 2015, to fill the vacancies left by the retirements of Fred Mathews and Paul File, respectively.
