It may read Cass Classic on the trophy, but the tournament is hitting the road this weekend as construction at Ross Beatty Jr./Sr. High School continues.

The Cassopolis volleyball tournament will be held at New Buffalo High School on Saturday.

Competing in White Pool will be the host Rangers, Marcellus, New Buffalo and Eau Claire. The Blue Pool will consist of Michigan Lutheran, River Valley, Mendon and defending champion Dowagiac.

Pool play is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m.

Dowagiac will open up play against Mendon in the second match of the day. The Chieftains will then face Michigan Lutheran and wrap up pool play against River Valley.

The Rangers begin action against Marcellus before taking on New Buffalo and Eau Claire.

The No. 1 seed in each pool receives a first round bye.

The No. 2 and No. 3 seeds from opposite pools will play in the quarterfinals with the winners advancing to face the top seeds in the semifinals.

Dowagiac edged Michigan Lutheran 26-24 and 25-23 to win last year’s championship in the debut of coach Rachel Zeider.

Zeider said the Chieftains are excited to defend their title.

“We are super stoked to start our season with the Cass Classic again,” she said. “Last year it was a great start to our season with a tournament win and we are looking to defend our title going into this season. I can’t wait to see this new team compete.”

The Chieftains defeated Bangor, River Valley and Michigan Lutheran in straight sets in reaching the semifinals.

Dowagiac defeated New Buffalo, with former Chieftain coach Carl Greulich at the helm, 25-12 and 25-18.

Cassopolis coach Demi Schrader, a former Niles standout, said her squad is not happy that the tournament had to be moved.

“Yes, my girls were very disappointed to find out that we will be playing in New Buffalo instead of at home for the Cass Classic,” she said. “They look forward to this tournament every year. My seniors are probably the most disappointed seeing as though they won’t have a chance to play a tournament at home ever again.”

Admission is $5 for adults, $3 for students and $15 for families.

Concessions will be available.

The JV version of the Cass Classic will be played Friday at Brandywine High School.

Cassopolis, Berrien Springs, Michigan Lutheran and Mendon will make up the White Pool, while Bridgman, Brandywine, Marcellus and New Buffalo will make up the Blue Pool.

Pool play is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m.

Admission is $5 for adults, $3 for students and $15 for families. Concessions will be available.
