Man trapped under wire roll at National Standard

A National Standard employee was injured when a roll of metal wire fell off of a forklift and onto his leg in an accident Tuesday morning at the Niles-based manufacturing company.

Public safety personnel were dispatched to the facility at 1631 Lake St. shortly after 9 a.m. on a call of a person trapped under a heavy object.

Chief Larry Lamb, of the Niles Fire Department, said National Standard workers had already freed the man from under the wire roll by the time they arrived.

He said the man, whose name is being withheld due to medical privacy laws, was taken by Southwestern Michigan Community Ambulance Service to Lakeland Hospital for treatment of injuries believed to be non-life threatening.

“I can’t talk much about that (injuries). He was conscious and alert upon arrival,” Lamb said.

Several public safety vehicles, including fire trucks, police cars and ambulances could be seen parked along the east side of the building.

Assisting the Niles Fire Department at the scene was the Niles Police Department, SMCAS, Michigan State Police and Niles Township Fire. Lamb said Niles Township responded, but was disregarded after it was learned the individual was no longer trapped.

“It took a team effort,” Lamb said.

Lamb praised National Standard workers for helping direct public safety personnel to the location closest to the injured person.

“They had a wall of guys directing us in because in these large buildings it can be challenging knowing where you are going. We carry lots of equipment so the closer we are to the outside the better,” he said. “When we got here they showed us the easiest access point, which is huge. They already had the people there assisting him.”

When contacted by phone, National Standards’ Director of Operations Tom Moran referred all questions to the human resources department. A voice message left with the human resources department Tuesday morning was not returned before press time.
