A pair of Buchanan girls basketball players will take part in the MHSAA’s Reaching Higher showcase at Milford High School July 25.

The Bucks’ Brooke Wesner and Jayla Bibbs will takepart in the one-day camp, which is now in its eighth year.

The Reaching Higher showcase brings together 200 athletes who plan on playing sports at the collegiate level.

They will train and scrimmage under the direction of high school coaches from across the state and in front of college coaches, including those from all three NCAA divisions, NAIA and junior college levels.

The MHSAA and the Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan have joined together in an effort to educate the student-athlete and their parents on what it takes to play at the next level and be successful in a college setting.

Coaches from 39 college basketball programs, including nine Division I schools attended last year’s showcase.

This is Wesners third year participating.

“Reaching Higher has given me valuable information from the college perspective piece of it and that has prepared me for the next level,” she said. “It also helped me to be a versatile player with my other colleagues. This year I plan to learn as much as I can and walk away with even more knowledge.”

The boys Reaching Higher showcase was held July 13 at Milford.

Speakers were Carlton Valentine, former Michigan State standout and Lansing Sexton coach, as well as the father of current Chicago Bulls draft pick Denzel Valentine; and Justin Jennings, who played at Grand Rapids Central and Purdue.

Former St. Ignace standout Nicole Elmblad, who knocked out Brandywine in the Class C state semifinals before heading to Michigan, will be one of the speakers at the girl’s portion of the showcase.

Dave Ginsberg, executive director of the National High School Basketball Coaches Association, will also speak.
