Niles Twp. prohibits truck traffic on Bond Street

The Niles Township Board of Trustees voted unanimously to adopt an ordinance prohibiting truck traffic on Bond Street within township limits during Monday’s regular meeting.

The move comes a little more than a month after nearly 30 residents signed a petition indicating they wanted to get truck traffic off of Bond Street, which residents said was not built to withstand the weight of heavy trucks.

Residents also complained that the truck traffic posed a danger to children, caused excessive noise and damaged the roadway.

The restriction will be on Bond Street from Fort Street to U.S. Highway 12.

Those in violation of the ordinance will be subject to a civil fine of between $150 and $500.

The township will place signs indicating no truck traffic at appropriate points along the restricted road.

The ordinance does not affect certain types of truck traffic, including fire trucks, road repair vehicles, garbage trucks and vehicles used for the repair of public utilities.

The trustees have been supportive of the ordinance since learning of the residents’ concerns. They had a first reading of the ordinance at their meeting two weeks ago.

Clerk Terry Eull said a public hearing was not needed in order to pass the ordinance.
