Investigators have confirmed that inmate Larry Gordon was handcuffed in front during the shooting at the Berrien County Courthouse that left two court officers dead Monday, according to the Berrien County Sheriff’s Office.

According to a release issued by the sheriff’s office Tuesday morning, a preliminary investigation reveals that Gordon, 45, of Coloma, disarmed the officer at 2:15 p.m. on the third floor of the Berrien County courthouse. After shooting three officers, Gordon briefly attempted to take hostages while other bailiffs and police officers in the courthouse engaged Gordon before he was shot and killed.

Gordon used Atterberry’s gun to shoot and kill Joseph Zangaro, 61, and Ronald Kienzle, 63. Both were retired police officers and worked at the Berrien County courthouse.

Zangaro was head of courthouse security and has been employed with the Berrien County Trial Court since May 2004. He retired from the Michigan State Police as post commander of the Bridgman post.

Kienzle was a bailiff and has been employed with the Berrien County Trial Court since April 2005. He retired as a sergeant of the Benton Charter Township Police Department after serving in the United States Army.

The sheriff’s office reports that the bodies of Zangaro and Kienzle were escorted last night by the Berrien County Sheriff’s Motor Unit and the Michigan State Police to Grand Rapids where autopsies will be performed later Tuesday.

Atterberry was also shot in the arm during the incident, and another civilian was injured.

Atterberry, 41, has worked for Berrien County since August 1998 and joined the sheriff’s office in 2002.

Both Atterberry and the civilian are listed in stable condition.
