Attendance down at Niles fireworks show

The Four Flags Area Chamber of Commerce estimates attendance at this year’s Niles fireworks show decreased between 1,000 and 1,500 people from previous years.

Chamber President Tyanna Weller said the organization does not get an official count, but relies on donations (parking/sticker sales) and observations to generate an estimate.

“There were not as many people there. … The parking lot was not full like it normally is,” she said.

“We want to thank the people that did come out and support the fireworks show and youth parade. It means a lot to us to see the community out and engaged.”

Weller said donations (for parking at the event) also decreased by approximately $1,000, meaning the chamber did not make enough money to cover the cost of the event.

Weller said the chamber plans to sell its Niles heart stickers at car shows and other events to help make up the difference. Stickers are $5 each.

Weller said she thinks low fuel prices combined with a three-day weekend led to a large amount of people traveling out of the city for the holiday, possibly explaining the low turnout at the fireworks show.

She thanked all the members who helped sponsor the event, which took place Friday at the Apple Festival Fairgrounds.
