Race for championship different between classes

The race for the 2016 Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship couldn’t be more different between the 450 and 250 classes.

Following last weekend’s Tennessee Nationals where Ken Roczen finished first in both motos and has now won nine out of 10, his lead in the 450 Class has grown to 47 points over Eli Tomac.

Meanwhile, in the 250 Class, Joey Savatgy’s lead in the overall standings shrunk to just 12 points as Cooper Webb won the event.

The 450 Class race seems to have just two horses as riders head to the RedBud Nationals in Buchanan this weekend.

Cole Seely is a distant third after the first five rounds and trails Tomac by 45 points.

Roczen, from Germany, has been so dominant, that if he finishes second in the remaining motos this season and Tomac, from Colorado, wins all the motos, he would still finish five points behind Roczen.

“I’m just going to keep doing what I’m doing [in training] because it seems to be working,” Roczen said. “We were able to get another win today and go 1-1, so we’ll just keep working.”

The 250 Class has been a complete opposite of the 450 as 10 different riders have earned a moto podium finish this year.

The class has three challengers as the AMA Pro Racing riders reach the midway point as the series’ premier track.

Neither Savatgy, from Georgia, and Webb, from North Carolina, can afford to falter as two-time defending champion Jeremy Martin is in third place and 20 points behind second.

Savatgy knows mistakes can cost him a shot at the title.

“I’m just very frustrated right now and disappointed in myself,” he said. “I shouldn’t have made those mistakes (in the second moto) and I lost a lot of energy just trying to keep my bike running. We still got second and have the red plate (as points leader), but we lost some valuable points today and need to bounce back next weekend.”

Action at RedBud begins Saturday morning with practice and qualifying beginning at 8:30.

Opening ceremonies are scheduled for 12:30 p.m. with the first of two motos beginning at 1 p.m.

The first moto can be seen live on MAVTV at 1 p.m., while NBCSN will carrie the second moto live at 4 p.m. Saturday.
