Division 2: Edwardsburg ousted by Coldwater

STEVENSVILLE — A six-run fourth inning propelled Coldwater to an 8-4 win over Edwardsburg in the Division 2 regional semifinals at Lakeshore High School Saturday.

The Cardinals broke a 2-2 tie with six runs, aided by an error after the Eddies had recorded the first two outs of the fourth inning.

A walk would load the bases for Kendall Galloway, who blooped a singled over first base to drive in a pair of runs.

An infield single by Katie Stanton scores another run, before Darlene Horn singled to plate two more runners.

“It wasn’t just that one inning,” Edwardsburg coach Randy Brooks said. “We didn’t play well the first four innings. There is no explanation. It is similar to what we did our first game of the year here (at Lakeshore). We made a bunch of errors early, dug ourselves a hole and couldn’t get out of it. When you do that late in the season, your season is over.”

The Eddies would scores twice in the bottom of the sixth to cut the lead to 8-4 on a solo home run by Layne Stinnett and two-run double by Kaylee Rycker.

The Eddies end the season at 32-6, a new school record for wins in a season.

Ali Strycker took the loss as she worked into the fourth inning before being taken out by Brooks and replaced by freshman Ashley Pion.

“She was struggling bad,” Brooks said. “She just didn’t have her stuff today. She was tight.”

Edwardsburg seemed tight even in warm-ups as they threw the ball away several times.

“We don’t normally do that,” Brooks said about the rough warm-up. “There are only 16 teams left and there is only going to be eight at the end of the day. You are not going to get into the final eight playing like that. You have got to earn it. Coldwater played well.”

Edwardsburg finished with eight hits, including a home run by Michaela Ritschard. Hannah Shoupe and Lexi Clark both finished with two hits.

The Cardinals had 10 hits in the contest, all singles.

Galloway, Jamie Wellett and winning pitcher Tyler Scheid each had two hits.

Coldwater would lose to Vicksburg 10-0 in the championship game. The Bulldogs rallied from a two-run deficit in the bottom of the seventh inning to beat St. Joseph 5-4 in the semifinals.
