Cassopolis’ Gatson wins Division 4 400-meter state title

GRAND RAPIDS — The Cassopolis boys track team finished third at the Division 4 state finals at Houseman Field Saturday.

The Rangers were led by state champion Deion Gatson, who won the 400-meters.

Bryce Saxton was second in the long jump, while both helped Cassopolis finish fourth in the 800-meter relay and eighth in the 400-meter relay.

Takuma Humano and Brandon Anderson completed the relay team.

Anderson finished sixth in the 200-meters.

Gatson ran 50.20 to win the 400-meters, while Saxton had a leap of 20-4.75.

The Rangers ran 1:31.70 in the 800-meter relay and 44.55 in the 400-meter relay.

Anderson ran a 23.14 in the 200.

For the girls team, Madison Brooks finished sixth in the shot put with a toss of  35-4.75.

 

Division 2

Dowagiac senior Leroy Lewis set a new school record in finishing second in the high jump at the Division 2 state meet at Zeeland Saturday.

Lewis went 6-8 to finish as the state runner-up.

Alex Klemm of Macomb Lutheran North set a new state record in winning the high jump with a leap of 7-feet. The old record, shared by two jumpers, was 6-11.

Nijah Russell finished fifth in the 200-meters with a time of 26.51.

Zoe Eby of Carleton-Airport was the 200-meter champion with a time of 25.17.

Niles’ Josh Buckingham finished eighth in the 100-meters with a time of 11.41.
Edwardsburg did not score in the meet, but the 400-meter relay team of Abbi Nugent, Britanea Carmean, Carly Cockrum and Alexa Markel set a new school record with a time of 51.37.
