The Dowagiac golf team will have its work cut out for it today as it competes in the Division 3 regional tournament at Lake Cora Hills near Paw Paw.

The Chieftains were runners-up at the district tournament last week at Island Hills after
shooting 370.

That score is the eighth best score coming into the regional.

In the Hastings district, Grand Rapids NorthPointe Christian shot 328 to win the team title.

Also qualifying were Olivet (336), Grand Rapids South Christian (339), Portland (340), Grand Rapids West Catholic (360) and Lake Odessa Lakewood (367).

They will join Schoolcraft (345), Comstock (373), Lawton (395), Constantine (424) and Buchanan (425) from the Constantine district.

Dowagiac coach Bob Turner said his team will have to shoot much lower to advance as a team.

“I think we need to be at or under 340,” he said. “We played a practice round yesterday and learned a lot about the layout. There are a few tricky holes that we learned what side of the fairway we need to be on and a couple of holes that we need to play safe on. Several holes are risk-reward and hopefully we figured a few of them out.”

Turner said he believes NorthPointe is the favorite to win the regional championship.
