Dowagiac softball sweeps Berrien; baseball falls to Tigers

BERRIEN SPRINGS — The Dowagiac softball team swept a non-league doubleheader from host Berrien Springs Friday.

The Chieftains won the first game 11-1 and the nightcap 17-0.

In the opener, Taylor Hulett tossed a two-hitter with 11 strikeouts and no walks. She also went 3-for-3 with a home run and four RBIs.

Amiyah Smith and Alyssa Allen both singled and doubled. Allen also drove in two runs.

Kailey Fear doubled and drove in a run for the Chieftains, who also got two hits and an RBI from Marissa Dodd.

In the nightcap, Megan Soderbloom tossed a one-hitter with eight strikeouts. She also went 3-for-3 with a double, home run and three RBIs.

She now has a school record eight home runs on the year.

Hulett was 3-for-3 with a triple, home run and seven RBIs as the Chieftains finished with 19 hits.

Allen was also 3-for-3 with a double and two RBIs, while Smith, Dodd, Fear and Hannah Whitaker all had two hits.

Dowagiac baseball

BENTON HARBOR — The Dowagiac baseball team gave up five runs in the second to visiting Benton Harbor in a 9-1 non-conference loss Friday.

The Tigers also scored four runs in the fourth to account for their total.

Dowagiac’s lone run came in the second inning.

The Chieftains (13-19-1) outhit Benton Harbor 7-4, but two errors aided in the Tigers’ victory.

Brenden Dudley was 2-for-2, both doubles, while Taylor Dodd was 2-for-2 and drove in the lone run.

Mack Charles took the loss with relief help from Brandon Felthouse.

The second game was called due to rain.
