Shots fired at Dowagiac apartment complex
Detectives with the Dowagiac Police Department are seeking information about the whereabouts of two individuals suspected of shooting at an occupied apartment early Monday morning.
According to police, the shooting occurred around 12:35 a.m. at the Eagle’s Trace Apartment complex, located off Amerihost Drive, when two men drove up to one the buildings located on the property. One of the men exited the vehicle on the passenger side, pointed a gun at a glass window of an apartment located on the second floor of the building and fired several shots into the structure before getting back inside the car and leaving the premises.
The five adults and one child who reside in the targeted apartment were present at the time of the attack, said Director of Public Safety Steve Grinnewald. None of the occupants were injured by the gunfire.
According to witnesses questioned by police, the shooting followed an altercation that took place at the complex parking lot around 8:30 p.m. Sunday, the first time the vehicle used by the suspected shooters was spotted at the complex, Grinnewald said.
“Witnesses said they couldn’t hear what was being said, but they reported the altercation was between the two individuals suspected in the shooting as well as somebody else who comes to the apartment complex from time to time,” he said.
The apartment the shooter attacked was not likely his intended target, Grinnewald said.
“I believe they just had the wrong apartment,” Grinnewald said. “The occupants had nothing to do with the altercation that happened earlier that evening.”
Police believe that between six to 12 shots were fired into the living room area of the targeted apartment, based off various eyewitness accounts. Police suspect the shooter used a medium caliber handgun, based off shell casings recovered by investigators at the scene.
None of occupants of the apartment were in the living room at the time of the incident, Grinnewald said.
The third individual involved in the earlier altercation has been contacted by police, but is not presently cooperating with the investigation, the police chief said.
Police say the suspected shooter is a black male who appears to be in his 30s, with a thin build. He was wearing a black-hooded sweatshirt, black pants and appeared to have a hairstyle with cornrows or dreadlocks.
Less information is known about the suspected driver, other than he is also a black male.
The vehicle used by the men is described as a small, maroon colored SUV. Witnesses say they had not seen the vehicle around the complex prior to Sunday’s altercation, Grinnewald said.
Anyone with information about the suspects or the shooting are encouraged to contact the Dowagiac Police Department at (269) 782-9743 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-342-STOP.
