Free skiing offers healthy opportunity

Southwest Michigan fourth- and fifth-graders have the opportunity to get three free lift tickets to 30 participating Michigan ski areas under a Michigan Snowsports Industries Association (MSIA) program.

The initiative is about helping keep our children healthy and get them excited about being active in Michigan’s winter wonderland.

I encourage Southwest Michigan families to take advantage of this generous offer — even if it is just a time to bond with family and friends.

It is a great chance to introduce young kids to new experiences and activities or help foster a new interest in the enjoyment of Michigan winters to last a lifetime.

The “Cold is Cool” Fourth & Fifth Grade Ski & Ride Passport is one of the elements of MSIA’s “Cold is Cool” program, which is dedicated to improving the health of the children in the state by offering winter outdoor exercise activities for all Michigan kids and their families.

In order for fourth- and fifth-graders to use the free lift or trail pass coupons, a paying adult must accompany them. Up to two students can ski free with each paying adult. Although the skiing is free, MSIA charges a $20 printing and shipping fee for each passport ordered.

The passport also includes additional discounts on the slopes and in Michigan ski shops.

Residents can download an interactive application form by visiting the MSIA website at www.goskimichigan.com. Click on “Cold is Cool – 4th and 5th Graders Ski Free!”

The site also includes valuable information on other money-saving programs, ski equipment and Michigan lodging. One especially useful link offers updated information for residents on ski and snow conditions at Michigan resorts, as well as details on amenities.

This is a Michigan program that can help keep our kids healthy, save money for parents and highlight our state’s wonderful ski resorts. Even if you are unable to participate in the program, I encourage you to consider getting out and enjoying Michigan skiing. And the MSIA website is an excellent resource to help you plan your trip.
