BERRIEN SPRINGS — With eight fuzzy, chocolate-colored bunnies hopping around their mother, Hunter Kuntz’s cage was a popular destination Thursday at the rabbit barn.

Several people — mostly young girls and boys — stopped by to see and hold one or two of the Buchanan boy’s award winning animals.

“They are fun, cute and cuddly,” Kuntz said. “Well, most of them.”

Kuntz was more than willing to show off his rabbits. After all, they were named the Grand Champion Doe and Litter this week at the Berrien County Youth Fair in Berrien Springs.

The award was just one of many that Hunter and his 8-year-old sister, Morgan, have brought home during several years of showing at the fair.

Hunter’s New Zealand rabbit was named Best of Breed this year. He had a Best of Show rabbit in 2013 and a Reserve Grand Champion Cross Breed in 2014.

Morgan had the Best of Show rabbit last year.

Their father, Matt, said the family has been raising show rabbits for about 10 years now.

“It’s just a family thing we do,” he said.

The Kuntz family also likes to spread the wealth.

Sixteen-year-old Ethan Forray, of Buchanan, said he got his rabbit from Matt. The rabbit ended up earning the title of Grand Champion Cross Breed.

“I never had a grand champion before,” Forray. “He said take this one and you’ll have a grand champion.”

The fair continues today through Saturday.
