LANSING, Mich. — Sen. John Proos reminded Southwest Michigan residents that the U.S. and Michigan flags at the state Capitol have been lowered to half-staff on Monday in honor of former state Sen. Harry Gast, who passed away on July 30.

“Senator Harry Gast meant so much to our community and the state through his long and respected years of dedicated service, and having the American and Michigan flags lowered in his honor is a testament to his contributions,” said Proos, R-St. Joseph. “People throughout Southwest Michigan and statewide loved to work with Harry because he was a straight shooter who always remembered where he was from. He was a proud farmer and family man who rose to chair of the powerful Senate Appropriations Committee for 18 years. He will be greatly missed, and it is wonderful to see the state pay tribute to his life and memory.”

Gov. Rick Snyder ordered the flags to be lowered over the Capitol. Michigan residents, businesses, schools, local governments and other organizations also are encouraged to display the flag at half-staff. Flags should be returned to full-staff on Aug. 4.

Gast served in the Michigan House from 1971-78 and in the Michigan Senate from 1979-2002. During Gast’s tenure, he was named as Legislator of the Year by numerous organizations, such as the Michigan United Conservation Clubs and the Michigan Townships Association.
