Cass County sheriff to give public presentation next week

People with questions or concerns about Cass County law enforcement will be able to get answers directly from the horse’s mouth next week.

Cass County Sheriff Joseph Underwood will discuss the work his department does for the people of Cass County from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, July 7, at the county district library in Cassopolis.

The sheriff’s presentation, which is sponsored by the county Republicans and Tea Party, will focus on the relationship between the community and its law enforcement officers, and how both can assist each other to keep the community safe.

Members of the county Tea Party, who meet twice a month at the Cassopolis library, have been working since April to host a program with Underwood, said organizer Sue Smith.

In light of the recent rash of break-ins in the southern part of the county, now is as good a time as ever for locals to learn more about the operations of the sheriff’s office, Smith said.

“This is something the community will really benefit from,” she said.

The Tea Party often invites politicians and other community leaders to speak, Smith said. In February, State Representatives Dave Pagel and Aaron Miller and State Sen. John Proos were invited to discuss the Proposal 1 ballot initiative with county voters.

Though Cass County hasn’t faced the same civil unrest between law enforcement and the public as seen in  other areas of the country, Smith said that it’s important that people receive the chance to open a dialog with the men and women tasked with their protection.

“I hope we get a good turnout and a good representation of the county at the meeting,” Smith said.

The public will be invited for a tour of the county jail and dispatch center following Underwood’s presentation.
