The Niles-Buchanan YMCA is happy to announce a new Aquatics Program Save Our Swimmers (S.O.S.). This program is an introduction and orientation to swimming and water safety for youth ages 6 to 14 years old. Participants will learn basic swimming skills and how to be safe in and around water. The goal is to introduce the skills necessary to save themselves when faced with potential life threatening situations.
“Every day, 10 people on average die by drowning in the United States. Of these, two are children age 14 or younger. Even nonfatal drowning incidents can be life changing, causing injuries such as severe brain damage that may result in long-term disabilities. Fortunately, the Y has the ability to reduce these numbers and save lives,” said Kent Johnson, executive V.P./chief operations officer, YMCA of the USA.
“The Niles-Buchanan YMCA is committed to teaching and providing the highest water safety standards. It is important in the summer when families are spending time in area lakes and pools. The goal of the S.O.S. swim class is to provide youth with skills to be safe in and around water and to make the right choices when it comes to their safety,” –said Sammee Schaller, interim aquatics director.
Each S.O.S. swim session is one week long and lasts for one hour. This class is open to public as well as members of the Y. Cost is $25. For more information about this program contact members services at (269) 683-1552 or visit our website at www.nb-ymca.org.
