June Margaret Walters, 98, of Niles, died at 2:15 a.m. on Wednesday, June 10, 2015, at Silverbrook Manor in Niles.
She was born on Jan. 18, 1917, in South Bend, Indiana, to Leslie G. and Maggie L. (Ryan) Fenters. She was graduated from Niles High School, and has lived here all of her life. She was employed for several years in the offices of the former Michigan Wire Goods in Niles.
June was a member of Saint John’s United Church of Christ in Niles. She was also a member of AARP and the Lady Elks of the B.P.O. of Niles Elks #1322, and had participated in activities at the Niles Senior Center. She enjoyed golfing and bowling in Niles, and Camping with her family at Sturgis, Michigan. As a young lady, she had a remarkable career in the early days of softball.
On Jan. 12, 1941, in Niles she married Malcolm R. “Mickey” Walters. Mr. Walters served on the Niles City Fire Department, including many years as captain. They celebrated the 51st anniversary of their wedding just before he preceded her in death on March 24, 1992. She was also preceded in death by her brothers, Edward C. Fenters and Gilbert R. Fenters.
June is survived by several nieces and nephews including Craig Fenters, Betty June Sneyd, and Scott Fenters; and by a circle of great friends including her neighbor, Nancy Wegner.
The Graveside Service for June Margaret Walters will be at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, June 12, 2015, at Silverbrook Cemetery in Niles with the Rev. Raymond Fulbright of Saint John’s United Church of Christ officiating. Contributions in memory of June may be made to Saint John’s United Church of Christ. Arrangements were made at the Halbritter Funeral Home in Niles.
