What about the bridge update?

Sometimes even the best laid plans don’t turn out exactly as you would like them to.

We told you a couple weeks ago that we would provide a weekly update on the Main Street Bridge replacement project.

So far, it has been a little more difficult to get the information we need than originally anticipated.

We apologize for any confusion this may have caused.

So far, we have published one true bridge update, although we’ve written multiple stories about the bridge. The first update ran on page two in the June 2 edition of the Niles Daily Star.

While we will strive to bring the information to you as often as possible, it appears that the feature will run every two weeks instead of every week.

Why?

Christopher Jacobs, the project engineer with Michigan Department Of Transportation, said doing updates every two weeks would work best for him. He’s the man with the plan, and he is taking time out of his busy schedule to provide this service, so we will have to go with what he wants.

Last checked, workers were still a couple weeks behind schedule, but they are still on track to open the bridge to traffic by the end of the year.

Work to replace the 90-year-old bridge, which spans the St. Joseph River in downtown Niles, began in October. The MDOT-led project is expected to cost approximately $10.6 million. The bridge was originally scheduled to re-open to traffic in November.
