Ritchey turns in big night at Eddie Track Invitational

Aubrey Ritchey was the lone first place finisher Friday for Edwardsburg at the Eddies Track Invitational. Ritchey was the winner in the 800 meters with a time of 2:32.52.
Ritchey also placed fourth in the 1,600 meters (5:41.91) and was part of the second place 3,200 meter-relay team (10:22.96). Natalie Longo, Brittany Bowman and Brynn Ritchey were also part of that relay.
Penn won the girls meet with a 104 points. Lakeshore and Three Rivers tied for second with 100. Edwardsburg ended up fifth with 67 points.
“The first 800 she ran in the 3,200-meter relay was very impressive,” said Edwardsburg girls track coach Kevin Bartz about Ritchey’s day. “She then came back and ran a solid mile as well and she then still threw in an 800 on top of that. I think a lot of questions we’re answered in regards to where she’s going to be at the end of the year. With three weeks left in the regular season I’m very excited about where Aubrey is at right now. This will give her a little motivation as we get into the tournament season.”
Edwardsburg’s relay teams performed well in the girls meet. The 800-meter relay team of Carly Cockrum, Gabby Golba, Abbi Nugent and Alexa Markel placed third (1:55.42), the 400-meter relay team of Yessenia Merrill, Britanea Carmean, Taylor Hepler and Nugent placed third (55.25) and the 1,600-meter relay team of Markel, Golba, Longo and Bowman finished third (4:30.99).
Cockrum also finished third in the long jump (14-7 1/2), while Arika Fell finished third in the pole vault (7-6).
“We had a lot of personal bests today,” Bartz said. “We had solid performances all around. I was pleased with our mid-distances as well. Carly had a great day jumping.”
In the boys meet, Robbie Cline finished second for Edwardsburg in the 200 meters with a time of 23.95. Friday marked the first time that Cline had run the 200.
“We’ve been running him in relays this whole season and he’s got a lot of speed and had some good splits,” said Edwardsburg boys track coach Jon Pryor. “I said to him why don’t we just run you in an open event and see what you can do and maybe get you in it for the regionals. I was really impressed. He wasn’t sure if was going to be able to run as fast as he did. I thought he could run be around a 24. We’ll try him in the 100 next week and see how he does. He’s a faster runner then we thought he would be.”
Coldwater won the boys meet with 136 points. Edwardsburg was sixth with 18 points.
