Those wanting to get away from the Super Bowl hype this weekend have another, more refined, option available to them.

Artwork created by some of the best high school students in the area will be judged Sunday afternoon during the third annual Fernwood Art Show at Fernwood Botanical Garden and Nature Preserve.

The show will feature the works of around three-dozen students from the Brandywine, Buchanan and Niles school districts.

A reception will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. in the Clark Gallery. At that time, attendees will have the opportunity to mingle with the artists while judges choose the top three works in four categories: painting, pencil, mixed media and markers/chalk/pastels.

Niles art teacher Lisetta Zahm said entering a show is a valuable experience for budding young artists, whose work will remain on display for the entire month.

“It gives them exposure and confidence and helps them learn how to prepare for an art show and display their work,” she said.

In addition to showing their art, students have the option of selling it. They can even price it themselves.

“I plan on doing it for fun, but I will take offers,” said Niles sophomore Emily Lintz, whose pencil sketch of an Okapi — a rare Central African animal closely related to a giraffe — was entered into the show.

Lintz said she is most interested in learning what others think of her art and ways in which it can be improved.

“I hope to come away with a lot of ideas,” she said.

Cash prizes and ribbons will be awarded to the top three finishers in each category. First place gets $25, second $20 and third $15. Greater Niles Community Federal Credit Union donated the prize money.

Fernwood is located at 13988 Range Line Rd., Niles.
