Ferry Street Resource Center considers relocating

The Ferry Street Resource Center in considering moving from the historic one-room school house in Niles it currently inhabits in order to save money.

Sue Polishuk, director of FSRC, said maintenance and utily expenses are putting a strain on the non-profit organization’s already tight budget.

“It would save us anywhere from $7,000 to $10,000 a year if we find another place,” Polishuk said. “That would be a big boon for our budget if we could eliminate those expenses.”

Ferry Street Resource Center was forced to cut its hours in half after funding from its two largest sources — community development block grants and Niles Community Schools — was cut in half in October 2014, Polishuk said.

The center, located at 620 Ferry St., is now open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays. It provides services to low-income families in the Niles area, including emergency relief, referrals and employment assistance.

One possible destination is the Niles District Library.

Polishuk said the center is currently in conversations with library leaders to see if moving there would be possible.

Nancy Studebaker, library director, said the library board would likely consider the proposal in the next couple months.

In the meantime, Polishuk is trying to find someone willing to acquire its current building. Polishuk said she’d be willing to gift the building to the City of Niles if the city is willing take it.

The Niles City Council, which would have to approve the acquisition, discussed the pros and cons of such a move at Monday’s meeting.

City Administrator Ric Huff said no action was taken, but he expects the council to revisit the issue as soon as the Jan. 26 meeting.
