Hatch brothers carve up Comets

The Hatch brothers had visiting Coloma seeing double at Chris Taylor-Alumni Field.

The twins scored a combined six touchdowns as the Chieftains romped past the Comets 52-12 in Wolverine West Division action.

The win squared Dowagiac’s record at 3-3, while Coloma falls to 1-5 overall.

The Comets got on the scoreboard first when quarterback Caleb Hester broke loss on a 51-yard touchdown run to make it 6-0 after the extra point attempt failed.

It was all Dowagiac from that point on.

After being shut out in a quick first quarter, the Chieftains scored 33 points in the second quarter to break the game open.

Dowagiac would take a 33-12 lead into the locker room at halftime.

Hatch scored on runs of 34-, 40- and 46 yards, as well as returning a punt 65 yards for a score.

The Comets’ second and final touchdown of the night came late in the first half when Justin Pullins hauled in a 69-yard touchdown pass from Hester to make it 27-12.

Dowagiac got the ball and moved quickly down the field, capping the scoring drive with a 21-yard run by quarterback Bryce Dodd.

The Chieftains would score a trio of touchdowns in the third quarter, the last of which forced a running clock for the entire fourth quarter.

Brandon Hatch opened the scoring and Jared Hatch completed the scoring with runs of 49- and 5-yards.

Dowagiac finished the night with 405 yards of total offense, which included 364 yards on the ground.

Brandon Hatch led the way with 140 yards on nine carries. Jared Hatch gained 55 yards on just three totes.

Dodd was 5-of-12 for 41 yards and a touchdown. He connected with Austin Taggart on a 1-yard pass.

The Comets finished with 186 yards in total offense.

Hester was 12-of-36 for 150 yards, a touchdown and three interceptions. He also rushed for 47 yards.

Rolly Lucio, Nate Ward and Leroy Lewis all had interceptions for the Chieftains.

Dowagiac must win its final three games to qualify for the state playoffs. The Chieftains entertain Edwardsburg Friday night before hitting the road against Paw Paw and Berrien Springs.

The Shamrocks defeated the Redskins 26-8.
