A South Bend, Indiana woman was found not guilty by reason of insanity in the September 2013 attempted abduction of a 7-year-old Niles girl.

Bonnie Delia Farrow, 51, appeared Monday in Berrien County Trial Court before Judge Dennis Wiley, who ordered her committed to the state’s psychiatric care department.

Farrow’s lawyer, Andrew Burch, said Farrow would remain under lock and key at a psychiatric ward until “she is cured” of her multiple mental illnesses.

Farrow was charged with first-degree home invasion, kidnapping and impersonating a Family Independence Agency employee.

According to court documents, Farrow approached a 7-year-old girl in the 600 block of North Seventh Street in Niles Sept. 4. She told the girl she was in danger and tried to take her away, reports said. A neighbor yelled at Farrow to stop and the child ran back into her home.

Farrow then followed the child into the home and told the child’s mother that she was from Child Protective Services. The mother told her to leave and she was later arrested.

Farrow was eventually ordered to undergo a psychiatric evaluation to determine if she was mentally fit to stand trial.

Wiley read the results of the evaluation in court Monday, saying that it determined Farrow was mentally ill at the time of the offense and that she is legally insane.

The report went on to say that Farrow has been suffering from multiple mental health issues for the past 25 years, including schizophrenia and depression.

She was released from a South Bend mental health institution 10 days prior to committing this offense, the report said.
