Festival embodies Niles’ goodwill

You don’t even need a nickel in your pocket to enjoy the Four Flags Area Apple Festival.

Hundreds of volunteers have been working long, but worthwhile hours to make certain Niles’ biggest festival remains free to all who attend.

If you make it out to the fairgrounds this Thursday through Sunday take a look around for the people wearing the Apple Festival T-shirts. Those are the folks who are volunteering their time to make sure your experience is as good as possible. If you see one of these people, say “thank you.” They will appreciate it — even though they don’t do it for the recognition.

Niles should be proud of the volunteers, sponsors and others who help make the Apple Festival happen each year.

Their support is a testament to the goodwill of all who live in this great southwest Michigan community.

It is hard to believe, but the event has been happening since 1972, when a group of like-minded people decided they wanted to celebrate the annual apple harvest in a way that would include the whole community.

While many things have changed over the years, the festival’s spirit of offering apple-themed contests, food and good old-fashioned family fun has remained a constant since the beginning.

It does not matter if you are a newcomer or a seasoned Apple Festival veteran, there is something at the festival for everyone to enjoy.

We hope to see you out there this weekend.
