There were two winners Sept. 6 in the final football meeting of the University of Michigan and the University of Notre Dame.

The Fighting Irish, of course, for blanking the Wolverines, 31-0.

And the students of Southwestern Michigan College, who will benefit from $1,750 from the SMC Foundation auctioning eight tickets for its scholarship fund.

The foundation received a package of four tickets from an anonymous donor which were snapped up by a California fan for $1,000.

Two pairs of tickets donated by the Niles Daily Star and Leader Publications generated $750.

Lisa Bourdon of Niles, who attended with her husband, bid $400 for one set.

Her son attends Notre Dame while his girlfriend goes to SMC.

SMC student Nicole Brooks of Edwardsburg bid $350 for the other two.

“I am rooting for Notre Dame,” Brooks said. “My dad and his brother are going to be the ones going to the game because my dad is a Notre Dame fan and his brother is a Michigan fan.”

Foundation Executive Director Eileen Toney said SMC awarded more than $209,000 last year to help students cover the cost of attending the community college.

This was the first time sports tickets were donated to the college for auction.
