Edwardsburg kickers snap losing streak

A different attitude Monday helped the Edwardsburg boys soccer team blank Vicksburg, 4-0, to snap a five-match losing streak.
“They got back to having a little bit of fun,” Edwardsburg coach Sean Jesse. “We worked the ball a whole lot better and there was a lot more space. It was kind of nice to watch.
It didn’t take long for the 4-5 Eddies to gain some momentum against the winless Bulldogs. Chance Owens scored almost a minute into the match on a shot just outside the goal box.
“Sometimes, you luck out,” Jesse said about the first goal. “They had a goal kick that went off of one of their guys’ back to Chance. Chance hit it hard and when you got that kind of pace in that short of a distance it’s tough for a goalie to make a save.”
Edwardsburg stretch its lead to 2-0 after getting a goal from freshman Isaac Toms from 15 yards with 17:05 left in the first half.
The Eddies outshot the Bulldogs, 12-4, in the first half.
Edwardsburg put the match away by scoring on a third time on a shot just outside the goal box from Tyler Treat with 26:25 left in the second half.
About nine minutes later, Edwardsburg scored for the final time on a kick from Jonathan Albrecht just outside the goal box.
“We’ve had really balanced scoring all year,” Jesse said. “We’re just that kind of team right now. We still don’t finish well.”
The Eddies added 15 shots on goal in final 40 minutes. Edwardsburg goalie Ryan Mahaney had all five of his saves in the second half.
