A three-hour lightning delay didn’t bother the Edwardsburg football team in its Wolverine Conference game Friday against Allegan.

When play resumed, the Eddies looked sharp on both sides of the ball in posting a 72-6 win over the Tigers.

Edwardsburg, which scored on all nine of its offensive possessions, rushed for 393 yards.

A mercy-rule running clock started with 2:15 left in the second quarter after Robby Cline scored on a 14-yard run and Austin Cline scored on a two-point conversion run to give the Eddies a 50-0 lead.

“There was a little chaos waiting that long,” said Edwardsburg coach Kevin Bartz, whose team improved to 2-0. “(The officials) came in (to the locker room) and said, ‘get ready,’ a couple of different times. It was good to see that we came out ready to play.

“We got a lot of kids a lot of playing time. We saw a lot of good things from out second-string.”

Isaiah Miller rushed for 123 yards on six carries and scored two touchdowns for the Eddies. Damion Pompey added 97 yards rushing three carries with a touchdown, while Robby Cline rushed for 75 yards on four carries with two touchdowns. Cline also caught an 18-yard touchdown pass from Dante Razzano.

“After last week (a 42-40 Edwardsburg double overtime win over Three Rivers) we wanted our backs to work better on fakes and wanted the talking better with our (offensive) linemen,” Bartz said. “We did a much better job of that tonight.”

On defense, Edwardsburg recovered four fumbles and held Allegan to 141 yards.

“Defensively, we did a lot better job of swarming to the ball,” Bartz said.
