Dowagiac kickers fall in Wolverine West opener

SOUTH HAVEN — Visiting Dowagiac scored its first goal of the season, but the Chieftains are still in search of its first victory.

South Haven scored four second half goals to earn a 5-1 win over the Chieftains in Wolverine Conference West Division soccer Wednesday.

Dowagiac (0-3, 0-1 West) took a 1-0 lead in the seventh minute when Antonio Brito scored off an assist from Jorge Ruiz.

South Haven tied the match at 1-1 on a goal in the 13th minute by Armando Cortez.

The Rams’ Omar Calderon took over the second half, scoring a pair of goals and picking up a pair of assists.

Dowagiac returns to action Saturday when it hosts the Chieftain Invitational. The Chieftains will face Cassopolis in the opening match at 10 a.m.
