RICHLAND — The Niles softball team wrapped up a pretty impressive week by winning the Bronze Division of the Gull Lake Invitational Saturday.
The Vikings went 7-0 by sweeping Portage Northern and Bridgman earlier in the week and then winning all three games at the tournament.
Niles defeated Carlson 13-9 in the opening round before routing Haslett 17-2 in three innings and defeating Marine City 12-6 in the title game.
Tala Gentry was the winning pitcher in all three games for the Vikings. She also doubled against Carlson and Haslett. Courtney Ankrapp tripled in the title game.
“I was happy how we did not let adversity set us back today and battle through it,” Niles coach Ryan Frontczak said. “We played team ball today. We did a great job of picking each other up today. Our girls did what they had to do today. I would have to say our bats once again came through for us when times were tough.
“It’s funny how when most teams are down they get freaked out. But with this team it seems to be just a matter of time and we will have our big inning. Once we have that big inning lookout. I thought we did a great job of battling today and competing to win this.”
