COMSTOCK — A pair of hard fought 1-0 wins for visiting Dowagiac over Comstock in Wolverine Conference non-divisional softball Tuesday should have the Chieftains tuned up for its West Division showdown with Coloma on Friday.

Dowagiac managed just seven hits in the two contests, but Chieftain coach Mike Behnke was proud of the way his team met the challenged and scratched out a pair of wins.

Mickie Kiggins, who doubled in the top of the seventh of the opening game, moved to third on a throw to the plate that cut down a runner and scored the game-winner on a wild pitch.

“We ran into a buzz saw of a pitcher tonight,” Behnke said. “She threw hard and we had trouble catching up to it. We took some better swings off her in the second game, but weren’t able to consistently drive the ball. Emily (Roach) struggled all night, but got the big hit when we needed it in the second game to drive in the winning run.

“Sabrina and Taylor dominated again as Comstock only had one real scoring chance all night, but we made the plays to get out of the inning. We need to work to get better swings in the coming days as we will be facing some quality pitchers over the next few games.”

Kourtney Mitchell was 2-for-3 with a double in both games to lead the Chieftains.
