The Capt. Samuel Felt Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) named Marcellus’ Ruth Ann Hostetler as its 2014 Good Citizen at its regular monthly meeting at the Cass District Library Monday.

The DAR also presented the Edwardsburg Area History Museum with its American History Award.

The Sparks family of Penn Township was honored with the National Conservation Award. The award was presented by DAR State Conservation Chairman Lisa Pietrzak.

Hostetler was one of seven area students chosen named DAR Good Citizens at the December meeting.

She was chosen by her classmates and teachers for her qualities of service, leadership and patriotism. Once chosen she had to provide a transcript of her grades from high school, two letters of recommendation, a detailed list of high school activities, volunteer service and extracurricular activities.

Hostetler also had to write an original essay of no more than 500 words on the topic “Our American heritage and our responsibilities for preserving it.”

Hostelter read her essay as part of the awards ceremony.

She will attend Word of Life Bible Institute and either transfer to Grace College or Cornerstone University. She is undecided on a major.
