Three wrestlers advance to championship quarterfinals

AUBURN HILLS — The opening day of the Michigan High School Athletic Association individual state tournament at The Palace of Auburn Hills saw limited success for area wrestlers.

Dowagiac’s Tristan Howard, Edwardsburg’s Michael Higley and Niles’ Darek Bullock-Mills were the only wrestlers to win their first round matches.

Howard beat Scottville Mason County Central’s Doug Wyman 2-1 in Division 3 at 285 pounds, while in Division 2, Higley scored a major decision (17-6) win over Emillo Sanchez of St. Johns at 103 and Bullock-Mills blanked Ortonville-Brandon’s Gordon Dwyer 5-0 at 130.
