Upset that his brother had been sentenced to prison, Terron Marquis Young decided to seek revenge on a state witness who had testified against his brother, Justin Young, in trial.

Terron and two other men brutally beat the state witness, Treveon Williams, at Rotary Park in Dowagiac in April.

During the assault, witnesses said Terron yelled out, “This is for J” and “You gave my brother 15 years,” according to Cass County Circuit Court Judge Michael Dodge.

Ten months later, Terron is going to prison, too.

Dodge sentenced Terron to three years in the Michigan Department of Corrections Friday in Cass County Circuit Court. Terron, who has credit for 310 days served, pleaded guilty to the felony charges of witness retaliation and assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder Jan. 21.

Cass County Prosecutor Victor Fitz said the actions of Terron and his co-defendants strike at the heart of the criminal justice system.

“The comment was made that ‘this was for J.’ Well, today, this is for justice,” Fitz said.

Terron was contrite in his statements during sentencing, taking accountability for his actions.

“All I can do is learn from my mistakes and work to better myself,” he said.

Terron’s defense attorney said Terron had a difficult childhood, growing up with a father who was never part of his life and a mother that was in prison.

Dodge sentenced Terron toward the bottom end of the sentencing guidelines, which were 29 to 85 months.

Terron’s co-defendant, Darius Wilson, was sentenced to 2 1/2 years for his role in the assault in January. Co-defendant Tyquill Douglas pleaded guilty in January and is scheduled for sentencing March 7.
