With its 68-55 win over South Haven on Friday, the Edwardsburg boys basketball team is a step closer to making school history.

The Eddies, who clinched the Wolverine Conference West Division title by beating the Rams, can claim the overall conference title with a win Thursday at home against Otsego. Edwardsburg has never won a conference championship in boys basketball.

Both Edwardsburg and South Haven owned 7-2 division records entering Friday’s game.

“It’s huge for Edwardsburg and for the guys on our team that have worked so hard all season,” said Edwardsburg coach Steve Wright about winning the division title. “They’ve done everything we’ve asked them to do. They play well together. Our thing is to leave it all on the floor and have no doubts. I’m so proud of our kids.”

Edwardsburg, which improved to 13-5 overall, took the lead for good at 15-12 after getting a 3-pointer from Isaac Vite with 1:20 left in the first quarter.

An 11-2 run gave the Eddies a commanding 51-37 lead two minutes into the fourth quarter.

“Shots weren’t really falling for us,” Wright said. “It was a credit to our team to continuously attack and stay aggressive.”

Grant Szalewski scored 17 points and grabbed six rebounds for the Eddies. Jackson Gaideski added 14 points and 15 rebounds, while Dylan Hulett contributed 11 points. Six different players scored at least six points for Edwardsburg.

“All our players are unselfish,” Wright said.

The Eddies owned a 35-20 rebounding advantage and shot 15-for-19 from the free throw line. South Haven was only 10-for-19 from the free throw line.
