H. Dewey Flesh, age 87, formerly of Edwardsburg, Mich., passed away on Monday, Feb. 3, 2014, in South Bend, Ind.2-14FleshObit

Dewey was born in Saint Louis, Miss. on June 7, 1926, the son of Henry Dewey Flesh, Sr. and Julia Schierhoff.

Dewey served honorably in the United States Navy from 1944 to 1946, then returned home to Saint Louis where he attended Washington University, graduating with a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration.

He married Betty L. Beamer, of Saint Louis, Mo. in 1952, and then settled in Griffith, Ind.

Dewey had a long career as an administrator with Ancilla Domini Hospitals, beginning at Saint Catherine’s Hospital in East Chicago and ending at Saint Joseph Hospital in Mishawaka, from where he retired in 1985.

Dewey continued his education and earned a Master’s degree from the University of Notre Dame in 1981, and he was very active in the community. He gave many hours of his time to the Salvation Army, Kiwanis, the Boy Scouts of America, Saint Matthew’s Parish, and other local organizations.

A devoted husband, father and grandfather, Dewey enjoyed fishing, cooking, gardening, and spending time with his family. His most recent favorite pastime was visiting with his grandchildren and hearing about all their activities and interests.

Dewey is survived by his daughter Renee Hensley and son-in-law Brian Hensley of Edwardsburg, Michigan; son Bill Flesh, daughter-in-law Betsy (Greve) Flesh, granddaughter Emma Flesh, granddaughter Samantha Flesh, and grandson Nathan Flesh of South Bend. He was preceded in death by his parents Dewey, Sr. and Julia Flesh and his wife, Betty L. Flesh.

Funeral services were held at McGann Hay Funerals | Cremations | Gatherings, Granger Chapel, 13260 SR 23, enter off Cherry Rd., on Saturday, February 8, 2014, at noon, with visitation from 10-noon prior, with Rev. Terry Coonan, Associate Pastor at St. Pius X Catholic Church, officiating. Cremation will follow with burial later at Edwardsburg Cemetery.
