Berrien County landfill offers thousands in scholarships

The Southeast Berrien County Landfill is offering scholarships for deserving high school seniors, recently graduated students and other residents within Bertrand Township, Buchanan, Buchanan Township, Niles and Niles Charter Township.

The landfill awarded nine $1,000 scholarships last year, said Jackie Grice, landfill representative. This is the second year for the scholarship program.

The past winners are: Lance Rensberger, Alexander Ulrickson, Josiah Twiddy, Kathleen Clark, Haley Helt, Daniel Cantu, Chelsea Kuntz, Hunter Benitez and Jessica Lafler.

Candidates must be interested in or intending to pursue a career or course of study in a college, university or other accredited higher education institution. Scholarships are merit-based, but financial need shall also be considered.

Scholarships will be awarded as follows:

• At least one high school student each from Niles, Brandywine and Buchanan schools

• Up to three other students within the five municipalities

• Up to three other residents at large within the five municipalities

• Scholarships are valued at $500 to $1,000 per academic year

Applicants must complete an application form and sent it to: Southeast Berrien County Landfill Scholarship Committee, PO Box 337, Buchanan, MI 49107. Hand-delivered applications will not be accepted.

Applications may be picked up at a local city or township hall and the landfill, 1540 Mayflower Rd., Niles.

The letter of application should contain an explanation of career goals and biographical information limited to 500 words. Letter must be signed by the applicant.

Three signed letters of recommendation are needed.

The applicant must also have an official high school transcript or diploma/GED for adult students.

The deadline for submitting is March 31.
