Two Michigan City, Ind., men were arrested Tuesday on charges stemming from the alleged theft of scrap metal in Berrien County.

Kevin Johnson, 51, and Chad Wingard, 23 were taken into custody, according to a release from the Berrien County Sheriff’s Department.

Officers were called to the Whittaker Woods Storage Units on Wilson Road in New Buffalo Township for a larceny in progress at approximately 1:30 p.m. Tuesday. Upon arrival, officers found that employees from the storage unit business discovered Johnson and Wingard allegedly stealing scrap metal and blocked them from leaving. Johnson and Wingard were taken into custody. Through the investigation, it was discovered that Johnson and Wingard were also suspects in a larceny of scrap metal from another New Buffalo Township location in late November.

It is believed that several hundred dollars of metal had been stolen and turned in for scrap at the two locations.

Police say this investigation will be ongoing as there has been an increase in larcenies of scrap metal and thefts from storage units in the New Buffalo and Three Oaks area over the past several months.
