Relay for Life may still be almost two months away, but now is the time to start building your team.

The fifth annual Edwardsburg Relay for Life will be July 13-14 at the Edwardsburg Middle School.

So far there are 15 teams registered, but event organizers are looking for more.

Anyone can put together a team. Some of the most common teams consist of co-workers, family members, businesses, schools, organizations and religious groups.

Prior to participating in Relay for Life, team members go out and raise money through fundraisers and sponsorships.

“All of us who participate in Relay are a part of the cure,”stated Angie Carrick, event chair. “Everything we do at Relay contributes to deducing cancer mortality and incidences. Whether it is raising dollars that go to support patient programs and research or volunteering to commit to advocacy and education efforts — we’re all a part of the fight.”

Relay teams take turns walking throughout the 24-hour period. They camp out overnight and share the experience while helping raise money to fight cancer.

During Relay for Life, luminaries will be lit and there will be a survivor ceremony to honor those who have lost the battle with cancer and to celebrate those who have won the battle.

Anyone interested in starting a team or joining one may do so by going to www.relayforlie.org/edwardsburgmi. Individuals may also donate funds through the same website.

The next committee and event meetings are scheduled for June 24 at the Edwardsburg Fire Department.
