OTSEGO — The Dowagiac softball team defeated host Otsego and Berrien Springs to go 2-0 at the Wolverine Conference Softball Tournament Saturday.
The Chieftains played in the lower level of the tournament and was not eligible to win the league title.
South Haven edged Edwardsburg 3-1 to claim the Wolverine Conference championship.
In the first game against Otsego, Dowagiac scored two in the first and then three runs in the third and fifth innings to account for their eight runs.
The Chieftains finished with 12 hits, led by Kourtney Mitchell who was 4-for-4 with two doubles and an RBI. Rachel Bailey was 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBIs, while Emily Roach was 2-for-4 with two doubles and an RBI. Corinne Kasper also had a double.
In the second game, Amanda Craft was 2-for-3 with a double and three RBIs, while Mitchell and Bailey both doubled and drove in a run. Roach also doubled.
“We played pretty good softball today for the most part,” Dowagiac coach Mike Behnke said. “We jumped ahead early on both teams and then made some mistakes defensively, but that was it. We hit the ball hard which all the extra base hits show and we ran the bases well after doing horribly last Wednesday.
“I have to point out the defense of Kristyn Turner today. She made two great diving catches on sinking line drives in each game and the one against Otsego she turned into a double play. She wasn’t happy with her hitting today, but I told her she may not have helped us get runs, but she prevented Otsego and Berrien from getting more runs which helped us win.”
