Rangers move step closer to championship

Visiting Cassopolis moved a step closer to the Lakeland Conference soccer title with a 5-1 win over Brandywine Tuesday night.

The Rangers are now 2-0 in conference action with only a match against Bridgman May 15 standing in their way of the title.

Cassopolis outscored the Bobcats 3-1 in the opening 40 minutes of play to secure the victory.

Jessica Waldschmidt had two goals and an assist for the Rangers, who also got two goals from Talessa Garner.

Also scoring for Cassopolis was Cassy Pflug.

After Garner gave the Rangers a 1-0 lead in the fourth minute, Brandywine’s Brooke Smith scored in the 10th minute to tie the match at 1-1.

Back-to-back goals by Garner and Waldschmidt in the 22nd and 23rd minutes gave Cassopolis the lead for good.

The Rangers outshot the Bobcats 12-3. Sloan Kangas had eight saves for Brandywine, while Molly Moroz had two saves for Cassopolis.
