Defending Wolverine Conference champion South Haven swept a West Division doubleheader from the host Dowagiac softball team Friday.

The Rams blew out the Chieftains 7-0 in the first game, but Dowagiac made a contest out of the nightcap.

South Haven scored a run in the fifth inning to edge the Chieftains 3-2.

“I hope we can use tonight as a spring board for the rest of our season,” Dowagiac coach Mike Behnke said. “We battled one of the tougher pitchers in the area and gave ourselves an opportunity to win that second game. We have to start making the routine plays though if we want to start winning games.

Emily Roach, Kristyn Turner and Tori Smith each had a hit for the Chieftains in the first game.

Kourtney Mitchell was 2-for-3 with two RBIs in the nightcap.
