An Edwardsburg man who allegedly strangled and threatened to kill a police officer last week is headed to trial.

Matthew Ryan Brown, 24, waived his right Tuesday to a preliminary exam and was bound over for trial in Cass County Circuit Court at a date yet to be determined, according to the prosecutor’s office.

Brown is accused of brutally attacking an Ontwa Township-Edwardsburg Police officer in the early morning hours of July 31. Prior to the alleged attack, the officer, Kevin English, was checking on Brown’s safety at Brown’s residence in the 24000 block of Redfield Road.

Cass County Prosecutor Victor Fitz said, during arraignment last week, Brown knocked English off a porch and into some bushes where Brown began strangling the officer.

Brown allegedly told the officer he was going to kill him, according to witnesses.

Fitz said the officer indicated he was faint and almost lost consciousness before emergency service workers came to his aid. Brown is also accused of attacking those workers.

Brown was arraigned on felony charges of assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder and resisting and obstructing a police officer. He was also arraigned on two misdemeanor counts of aggravated assault.
