Bruce Laing, chairman of Wolverine Mutual Insurance Company in Dowagiac, donated $1,000 to the Fitch Camp during its open house.

“I like to donate what I can every year,” said Laing, who was a counselor for the camp years ago. “(The camp) is a valuable asset to the community and our future.

“If you just listen to the noise around camp, it’s a happy noise. The kids have a lot of fun, and we want to continue that.”

Camp Director Chris Cox accepted the donation for the camp, which offers hot lunch and transportation to and from the facility Monday through Thursday.

Cox  said the donation from Laing is necessary to the camp’s survival.

“We really appreciate it,” Cox said.

“We were able to purchase new sports equipment for the kids; when you bust out the new stuff, they’re so excited.”
