BERRIEN SPRINGS — Visiting Dowagiac evened the score with Berrien Springs Wednesday.

The Shamrocks defeated the Chieftains back in April at their own invitational. Wednesday, Berrien Springs was no match for Dowagiac, which won 15-4 and 27-9. The second game featured 21 walks and four errors by the Shamrocks.

Dowagiac banged out 16 hits and scores 15 runs in the first game against Berrien. A nine-run third inning erased a 1-0 Shamrock advantage.

Amanda Craft, Sierra Herter and Rachel Bailey all doubled for the Chieftains. Bailey also tripled and finished with five RBIs.

Kourtney Mitchell was 3-for-5, while Craft (3 RBIs), Bailey, Taylor Meiser and Corinne Kasper all had two hits. Herter drove in two runs.

Taylor Meiser and Tori Smith combined to scatter eight hits.

In the nightcap, Dowagiac had just seven hits, but with 21 walks and four errors, the Chieftains had no trouble scoring runs.

A 13-run third inning erased an 8-7 Berrien Springs lead.

Bailey, Mitchell and Shelby Huston all had two hits. Mitchell drove in five runs while Bailey and Huston had four RBIs. Kasper chipped with a pair of RBIs.

Dowagiac will face Niles in Stevensville Tuesday at 4 p.m.

“We haven’t been taking good swings lately, so it was nice to see all nine hitters get at least one hit in the first game,” Dowagiac coach Mike Behnke said. “I was proud of the girls in the second game for staying patient with the Berrien pitchers because they weren’t even close to the strike zone at times.

“And when we did swing, we hit the ball hard for the most part. It was also fun to watch one of our seniors, Sierra Herter, play every defensive position except pitcher in the second game. Something she can remember from this season.”
